"Go ahead and give Heath Ledger this year’s Oscar and next year’s Oscar as well. And while you’re at it, take that 2006 Oscar away from Phillip Seymour Hoffman and give it to Ledger for Brokeback Mountain. And fuck it: Give him the 2007 Oscar, too — his Joker performance was way better than Forrest Whittaker’s in The Last King of Scotland. Hell. You know what — here’s a better idea. Let’s just change the name from The Oscar to The Ledger, and instead of giving an Oscar to Ledger, give the Ledger to the runner-up. "

A Star is Born (1954): A-

This was a lot more depressing than I thought it would be. Still, it was beautiful and moving and I completely love Judy Garland.

Grey Gardens/The Beales of Grey Gardens: A

The most outstanding documentary I have ever seen. It feels like the Maysle brothers were there for a purpose, but it is not exploitative or crude. It's a beautiful, moving, sad depiction of the life of a mother and her daughter who were once at the top of society and have fallen. Absolutely stunning.

Heathers: B+

Finally saw the whole movie after seeing only the first part about 5 times. Hilarious and creepy and awesome.

Lars and the Real Girl: B

I love Ryan Gosling, and yet this movie underwhelmed me. I think he did a fantastic job with his role, but the movie lacked the sophistication that leads me back to some of his other movies (see Half Nelson or The Notebook).

Movies to watch this summer

Or, the ones my library has so I don't have to pay for Netflix:

The Beales of Grey Gardens
Blade Runner
Brick
Bringing Up Baby
Can't Hardly Wait
Election
Little Children
North by Northwest
The Philadelphia Story
The Queen
Rain Man
Sabrina
The Thin Man
To Catch a Thief
The Waitress

Instead of studying for finals...

Shakespeare in Love - F

I don't care that this movie won the Academy Award for Best Picture. It was awful. I can't even look at that picture without being transported back into the awfulness. I knew there was a reason I had avoided it for so long. It also doesn't help that I'm taking a Shakespeare class this semester and I legitimately enjoy Shakespeare. I just... don't like this movie. And I don't know why but I cannot bring myself to like Gwyneth Paltrow. I just can't. Every movie she is in I just loathe her. Couldn't tell you why. I want this movie to be purged from my memory. Now.

Once - B

It's sort of an underwhelming movie, but the music makes up for what the film itself lacks. I guess you could describe this as "my type of music." It's beautiful and moving. The film... meh. But the music is incredible.

Becoming Jane - D
The only redeeming thing about this movie is my love for James McAvoy. I enjoy Anne Hathaway most of the time, but when will the studios get it in their heads that American does not equal British. If you are not born in Great Britain, you do not have an British accent (I'm looking at you, Madonna). Jane Austen was British. Anne Hathaway is American. DOES NOT COMPUTE. Sigh. James McAvoy is still incredibly cute.
